Write the Pause Rules Before an Advertising Campaign Breaks

November 06, 2026•2 min read

A broken booking path and a disappointing day of results should not receive the same response. Write campaign pause rules before launch so the team can stop a proven failure quickly without changing strategy after every fluctuation.

Separate customer-facing failure from uncertain performance

A form that cannot submit, an unavailable advertised service or a confirmation containing the wrong appointment details is a direct problem. A higher cost per inquiry over a short period may need investigation before a campaign change.

Define the difference in your operating notes. Otherwise the assistant may continue offering an unusable service while the owner debates campaign performance, or a campaign manager may repeatedly pause a functioning test because its early numbers vary.

Create a pause decision card

  • Observed condition: Form or booking path fails an internal test; Immediate action: Stop directing paid traffic to that path or use an approved working alternative; Who decides next: Campaign and booking owners

  • Observed condition: Advertised service cannot be delivered; Immediate action: Pause the affected offer; Who decides next: Business owner

  • Observed condition: Unexpected spend outside the approved limit; Immediate action: Use the agreed budget control; Who decides next: Authorized account owner

  • Observed condition: Short-term performance changes with no confirmed fault; Immediate action: Investigate against the test plan; Who decides next: Campaign manager

Keep the affected scope narrow

If one service page is broken, determine which campaigns use it. Do not necessarily stop unrelated working campaigns. If the whole inquiry system is unavailable, a narrow repair may not be enough. Name the dependency and document the decision.

Keep a current map of advertisements, destination pages, forms and calendars. It lets your team find affected paths without guessing from campaign names. Include any automated reply that still presents the unavailable next step.

Require a restart check

Before resuming the affected campaign, test the complete path with internal details. Confirm that the inquiry reaches the right place, the customer sees accurate instructions and the owner can find the resulting record. Check the actual published destination rather than only the editor preview.

Record what changed and when. Google’s experiment guidance explains why unrelated changes make test interpretation difficult. An interruption should be marked in the campaign review so the team does not compare a broken period with a working one as if conditions were equal.

Give the agent a safe fallback

If booking is temporarily unavailable, the assistant can collect an approved callback request and tell the prospect what will happen next. It should not make up open times or announce that an appointment is confirmed.

Review the incident after service is restored. Add a useful monitor or acceptance test for the actual failure, rather than creating a long checklist unrelated to what happened.
