Gym Trial Ads Get Signups but Nobody Shows Up. What Should You Test?

November 05, 2026•2 min read

Twenty people sign up for an introductory fitness offer and the trainer meets three. That tells you the trial is losing people somewhere, but it does not tell you whether the ad attracted the wrong audience. Trace the difference between claiming an offer and reserving a class.

Walk through one first visit

Starting from the ad, see whether a new visitor can tell which session is included, who it suits, how long it lasts and whether the trial is free or paid. Show what to bring and where to enter. In a shared building, a photograph of the entrance may be more helpful than another photograph of exercise equipment.

If a visitor claims a trial without choosing a time, confirm that the next message offers bookable times for that exact offer. If a class is already full, give an honest alternative. If attendance requires an orientation first, make that the action in the ad. Avoid describing a voucher claim as a confirmed appointment.

Run one experiment at the weakest step

Count unique trial claims, times chosen, arrivals and paid enrollments for the same group of people. If most claimants never choose a class, test showing the schedule earlier. If people reserve places but miss the entrance or arrive late, improve the directions and arrival instructions. If people attend but never return, ask the coach what expectations the offer created.

Measure the cost per attended first visit as well as the cost per signup. Check that trial visitors had comparable class options before judging the new version. An offer with attractive photos cannot compensate for a class time nobody can attend.

For the next step, see how to compare signups with trial visits that actually happen.
