How to Set Up Campaign Link Names Your Sales Team Can Understand

November 05, 2026•2 min read

Start by deciding which question the campaign names should answer. “Which spring service offer brought in suitable consultations?” is more useful than “Which link got clicks?” Give the person reading the report a small set of labels they can recognize and reuse when the next campaign launches.

Create a short naming sheet

For each external link, keep its destination, source, medium, campaign and optional creative name in one shared sheet. A hypothetical Facebook ad could use source facebook, medium paid_social, campaign spring_consultation and content owner_video. Use one spelling and capitalization for each value. Google’s Analytics documentation explains what the campaign parameters describe and how they appear in acquisition reporting.

Google’s guide to campaign URL parameters

Keep the label meaningful months later. “test3” will mean little to the person reviewing next quarter. Avoid names, email addresses, phone numbers and other personal information in any URL. A campaign link can be copied or logged in places beyond the original ad.

Follow a click all the way to the record

Open the exact final link in a fresh browser session. If it redirects, check the destination address. Use an approved internal test to check what source the receiving form or CRM actually records. Analytics recognizing a campaign and sales seeing it on the inquiry are separate outcomes. Record a missing handoff before anyone draws conclusions about lead quality.

Agree what happens when a buyer returns through another link. Keeping an original source alongside a later campaign can be helpful if your system supports both. Document which field the team uses for which report. An owner running one campaign can maintain a small sheet. A team with several agencies should name an owner who can reject new labels that duplicate an existing channel under a different spelling.

Put this into practice
