Google Search Ads or Facebook Ads: Which Should You Test First?

November 05, 2026•2 min read

Ask the last few customers how they described their problem before they learned your product name. Their wording tells you something about where the next buyer might be looking. The right starting channel depends in part on whether people are already searching for what you sell or need to see the idea before it makes sense.

Test the shape of the demand

A business that repairs commercial refrigerators may hear “walk in cooler repair near me.” That phrase gives a search campaign a concrete problem and a clear destination. A company converting underused office rooms into podcast studios may need to show a before and after before a facilities manager realizes what is possible. A visual Facebook ad can introduce that idea.

Write one short search ad and one social ad on paper. For the search ad, identify the exact question and the page that answers it. For social, describe the first image and what a person understands in two seconds without knowing your brand. If one version requires elaborate explanation before it is credible, improve the offer before paying to distribute it.

Compare the outcomes with the same definition

Decide what counts as a useful inquiry, how sales will label it and how long you need to wait to see whether it advances. Search and Facebook can attract people at different points in a decision. Comparing only the cost per form can push budget toward people who are easy to attract and unlikely to buy.

For a first test, choose a channel your team can actually support with creative, a suitable page and timely follow up. Record what would justify keeping it, changing the offer or testing the other channel. Those written decisions make a conversation with a managed ads team far more productive than asking which platform is universally better.
