How to Advertise a Diagnostic Fee Without Losing the Right Auto Repair Leads
A driver searching for a check engine light diagnosis can be looking for a free code read, an appointment with a technician, or an exact repair price. Those are three different requests. An ad promising an instant estimate sends all three to the same service advisor and leaves the advisor to explain the difference.
Describe the visit before quoting a repair
Ask your lead technician what the initial diagnostic appointment buys. Write down the time or testing your shop includes, how the customer hears the findings, and what happens if further testing is needed. Have the service manager verify whether a diagnostic charge is credited toward repairs. State the policy exactly as the shop applies it. If it varies, name the condition that changes it.
For example, a booking page could read, “Book time with a technician to investigate your warning light. We explain our findings and ask for your approval before additional work.” If your fee is fixed, put the current amount beside that explanation. If the fee depends on the vehicle or concern, offer to confirm it before booking.
Find the point where drivers decline
For a week, ask advisors to record whether a caller wanted only a code scan, declined after hearing the fee, or booked a diagnostic visit. Compare that list with completed diagnostic tickets. A page that produces fewer calls and more completed diagnostic visits can still justify its advertising spend.
Give your marketing team one revision at a time. If drivers accept the fee but miss the appointment because they expected a while-you-wait visit, change the drop-off and pickup instructions first. Discounting the fee would solve the wrong problem.
