Appointment setting versus managed sales for MSPs

October 27, 2026•2 min read

Appointment setting focuses on getting relevant meetings onto the calendar. A managed sales service also takes responsibility for the work around and after those meetings: discovery, next steps, opportunity coordination, proposals, follow-up, and support through closing. Neither service can guarantee that a buyer will sign.

Compare responsibility, not just meeting counts

Ask who researches prospects, follows up with replies, confirms fit, records discovery, and manages the next step. A low cost per booking says little about whether meetings are attended or whether an opportunity progresses.

Know when appointment setting can fit

If your MSP already has people consistently handling discovery, proposals, and commercial follow-up, appointment setting may address a specific gap at the top of the process. Confirm that the internal team has the capacity to act on the meetings it receives.

Know when broader ownership matters

If the owner carries every follow-up, proposals stall, or buyers wait for the next action, adding meetings can increase the workload without solving the underlying sales gap. Managed sales is intended to give that progression a named owner.

Keep technical delivery separate

Even with broader sales support, your MSP validates solutions, approves pricing, performs authorized technical assessments, and delivers the work. Agree response expectations so sales conversations are not waiting indefinitely for technical decisions.

Read the commercial arrangement carefully

Compare the pilot or monthly retainer, approved data costs, and any closing commission separately. Understand what counts as delivery and what happens when the pilot target is missed. Do not assume an appointment target is a revenue guarantee.

Ask for a practical reporting example

A useful report distinguishes contacts researched, outreach activity, booked meetings, attended qualified appointments, open opportunities, and closed deals. It also explains the next action and owner. Illustrative dashboards should be labeled as examples, not presented as customer results.

THE ESCENCION OFFER

A managed sales process for your MSP or MSSP.

Start with the $997 30-Day Performance Pilot plus approved lead data at actual cost. Target two qualified, completed appointments within 30 days of campaign launch. If delivered, continue at $4,800/month afterward. Closing commissions are negotiated separately.

If the pilot target is missed, no additional pilot retainer is owed and continuation is optional. This is not a refund promise, and approved data costs still apply.
